Voodoo Doll/Poppet of Salem, Mass. 1692 in Shipping Crate
Using dolls to cast spells has a long history. In colonial New England these dolls were known as poppets (an older spelling of the modern puppet) long before the modern Voodoo Dolls came into existence.
During the Witch Trials of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, poppets were used as evidence against Bridget Bishop after several were found inside a wall in her cellar with pins stuck in them. This evidence helped make her the first person executed in the Salem Witch Trials.
Poppets were also used as evidence against Candy, a slave in the Salem Village house of Nathaniel Putnam. Candy confessed to being a witch, and ultimately escaped execution.
The remaining poppets were quickly crated up by the accused and shipped away at the Port of Salem in 1692 and have not been seen since…until now!
